About Holding Tank Systems

Holding tank systems safely contain wastewater until a contracted and licensed septage hauler pumps out the contents. In Door County, waste is hauled to a specific sewer district — the district and volume hauled determine the cost. The owner needs to schedule a pump-out when the alarm alerts them that the tank is nearing capacity.

About Septic Systems (POWTS)

Septic systems are Private Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (POWTS) — conventional, mound, or aerobic — that treat and recycle household water back into the water table. That recycled water is your drinking water, so keeping the system healthy matters.

Door County 3-Year Requirement

Door County ordinance requires inspection or pumping every 3 years. The County Sanitarian mails a Maintenance Pumping Report form each April to the property owner — it must be returned by October 31 of that year. Pumping is required when combined sludge and scum layers exceed one-third of the tank volume.

  • Only a licensed plumber or septage hauler can sign and complete the report
  • Call us as soon as you receive the form — we compile a list and work through it all summer
  • Cycle is based on installation date or last inspection, not property purchase date
